The Monolithic Dome Industry is Big News in 2003

July 1, 2003

by Carol Lanham

Since its founding, the Monolithic Dome Institute has been working hard to raise awareness about Monolithic Domes among the general public. Over the years, we've found that one of the best ways to do that is through newspaper and magazine articles, radio interviews and television shows.

That's why we retained the BWG Agency, a Dallas-based public relations firm, in 1999. Every month, they help generate publicity on MDI's behalf by sending out press releases about new dome projects across the United States, contacting magazines with story ideas and targeting radio shows that would be interested in booking David South for an interview.

Here are some of the ways that BWG helped put the Monolithic Dome industry in the national and international spotlight in the first half of 2003:

Dry Cargo International, based in the United Kingdom, published a feature story on dome storage facilities. The article focused on large storage domes such as those used for storing concrete and fly ash.

Monolithic Domes were also the focus of a major news story in the February 2003 issue of Concrete Construction. The three-page article discussed the advantages of domed schools.

Another national magazine, School Planning and Management, chose to feature Monolithic Domes in its cover story on school construction trends. The article appeared in the January 2003 issue.

Construction Magazine also focused on a domed school facility. The School of Communication Arts in North Carolina was the subject of an article in the June 2003 issue.

The Monolithic Dome Institute has also been making news closer to home. The new domed facility at Corpus Christi Church in Ferris, Texas was the focus of articles in February 2003 editions of the Dallas Morning News, Texas Catholic, Ennis Daily News and Ellis County Chronicle.

Texas Construction Magazine published an article on the Italy and Avalon school facilities in its June 2003 issue and Mesquite Review, a South Texas magazine, wrote about Monolithic Dome homes.

Many of the recent articles highlight the hurricane and tornado-resistant qualities of Monolithic Domes.

Builder magazine, the official publication of the National Association of Homebuilders, pointed out in a recent article that Monolithic Domes are the only type of home strong enough to withstand the high winds of a tornado.

Hurricane-resistance was the focus of an opinion column by David South published in two Florida newspapers in February 2003. In his column, which appeared in the Fort Meyers News-Press and Bradenton Herald, David pointed out that the new Bishop Nevins Academy in Sarasota could serve as a model for public school districts in Florida. In other words, lawmakers should consider building new schools that could double as hurricane shelters.

David also recently appeared as a guest on two Florida radio stations discussing "Dome of Home" in Pensacola Beach. He told radio listeners at WBZR in Destin, Florida and WGMX in the Florida Keys about how Mark and Valerie Sigler qualified for funding from the Federal Emergency Management Agency to build their hurricane-resistant home.

David also was interviewed in a news broadcast on WVNN in Huntsville, Alabama about the tornado-resistance of Monolithic Domes.

Look for articles on Monolithic Domes in coming months in Solar Today and Jane magazine.
