"Married To Concrete"What Makes a Green Building?March 9, 2005 by David B. South
About four months ago, I read an article entitled Married to Concrete by William D. Palmer, Jr., Editor in Chief of Concrete Construction. The title caught my attention because as a Monolithic Dome Builder, concrete is an essential part of our business. The article is one of the best I have ever read and thoroughly answers the question, "What makes a green building?" The effectiveness of a green building has to be measured against the time and material it takes to create the structure. Materials that have to be replaced often may be cheaper, but costs society more in the long run. Concrete creates the greenest building possible because of its permanency. The Monolithic Dome uses less than half the concrete as a rectangular concrete structure. The energy saved in producing less concrete makes the Monolithic Dome the greenest structure available.
