Chapter Eight: Foam Equipment

Urethane foam is applied using specialized equipment. Urethane foam is a two-component system. The two components mix and set within about three seconds. Therefore, it must be handled with extreme care. In order to make it catalyze properly, the foam is heated -- increasing the complexity of equipment use.

Because of the complexity of the equipment and chemicals, polyurethane application is not a simple do-it-yourself project. We suggest hiring or subcontracting a foam applicator. Foam machines range in price from $13,000 to $30,000. They are expensive to maintain and tricky to operate.

Foam application equipment manufacturers are available. Most suppliers provide equipment-use training. Call Monolithic for names of foam and equipment suppliers.

As a business, polyurethane foam application makes sense. Urethane foam roofing is one of the fastest growing roofing systems in the United States.
