Safe from Storms in Minnesota

May 24, 2004

by Kris Garrison

A tornado in 1998 caused Harvey and Roberta Stadick of New Ulm, Minnesota to begin planning a new kind of home. Even though just the roof and windows of their masonry home were destroyed during the tornado, they wanted something stronger for a retirement home. The eight surrounding homes in the area were completely destroyed, so they felt grateful for their concrete structure. They knew they wanted something similar for their retirement home, but wanted something better insulated. After the tornado, they researched alternative building methods. Their research led them to the Monolithic construction method.

Over the years, their continuted interest in Monolithic Domes brought them to Italy, Texas (Monolithic headquarters), other dome homes and Autumn Leaf Bed and Breakfast. The Stadicks began planning their retirement home to be built on their 285-acre farm where they produce grain, corn and soybeans.

On May 23, 2004 they witnessed the inflation of the 48-foot diameter home which will feature 2 bedrooms, an office, an open living area and attached garage.

The dome shell is being constructed by Global Dome Builders in Mondovi, Wisconsin. For more information about Global Dome Builders, call Bill Fraley at 715-926-3668.
