Leitgeb Industries Completes Two DomesJanuary 21, 2004
The second dome was built in Lumberton, North Carolina on a flat grassy lawn. Completing the second dome was a race against time with the onset of winter. Larry was able to finish the dome shell in just three months. The concrete stage is complete and doors and windows are ready to install. When asked what Larry has learned so far in the dome building industry, he said. "I've learned to Know My Limitations." He explained, "When it comes to laying the foundation, you need to move fast before the concrete sets up. This means that you need about a dozen well trained men. The rest of the dome building process does not require that many personnel and would be impractical to hire that many people. So when it comes to laying the foundation, I did the preparation work setting up the forms and laying out the rebar lattice, but subcontracted out the actual pouring. It is the same with the foam stage of the process. Foam equipment is very expensive and must be used every day to keep the machines working smoothly. Here again is a perfect case to subcontract out to people who specialize in this work."
