NBC and MSNBC Reporters Ride Out Ivan in "Dome of a Home"

Monolithic Dome Home featured on the Today Show

September 16, 2004

Monolithic Domes have been the focus of many news stories across the nation this month due to visits from Hurricanes Charlie, Frances and Ivan. The following news organizations have featured Monolithic Domes:

Even though Pensacola Beach , Florida was deserted due to evacuation orders, the Siglers had permission to ride out the storm because of their Monolithic Dome home. The Siglers weren't alone. They served as gracious hosts to NBC News reporters on the day prior to the storm as they set up cameras in and outside the dome.

Reporters stayed through the night broadcasting live as often as possible. Before the eye approached, Pensacola reporters clenched railings on the front porch while reporting to America and gauging wind speeds as often as possible. At one point during the night, after recording a 65-mile an hour wind speed and practically yelling to be heard over the fierce wind, one reporter chose to go inside the dome to visit with Mark. It was obvious upon entering the dome that it was not only quiet and strong, but provided a safe haven from the storm. Mark gave the reporter an explanation of dome construction and bragged about the dome's strength, engineering and safety.

When daylight arrived

Although it's too early to assess damage to surrounding properties, NBC News Correspondent, Kerry Sanders wrote in his Reporter’s Notebook article, "Three houses directly to the east are gone. The houses to the west have the windows blown out and are likely trashed inside."

Since Dome of a Home is a vacation rental property, all are hoping that Hurricane Ivan has not destroyed future business potential.

The good news

The Today Show showed footage of Dome of a Home as daylight approached the coast and spoke to their reporter via phone. He said he spent the night in a dome designed to withstand hurricanes and the good news was that it did exactly what it was designed to do.

Mark is extremely pleased with how well the dome has performed. He told reporters, "There's an alternate way to do coastal building and I think the dome might be it."
