Dome Layout Contributes To Championship

by Freda Parker

To say that a dome layout can lead to a state championship might be stretching the truth. But maybe not!

Here's what we recently heard from Little Singer Community School on the Navaho Indian Reservation in the Little Colorado River Valley of Arizona:

In 1997, Little Singer completed its 120-foot diameter, two-story multipurpose Monolithic Dome, with a basketball court, gym, jogging track, bleachers for 300, classrooms and offices.

Fortunately, they placed their basketball court right in the center of that dome.

Dr. Mark Sorenson, executive director, says, "This past spring, our Junior High Boys Basketball Team, the Colts, won the small school state championship. We only have 30 kids in our whole junior high, so there were some teams that they played that had more kids on their team than we have in our entire school.

"But our boys kept on and one of the things we think was valuable was that our arrangement of our dome is such that we have our basketball court in the center and classrooms around the outside. So every time they have a break or time after lunch, they're able to practice. And more practice improves skills."
