Dome Institute Opens China Branch by Freda Parker With an office in Hong Kong, the Monolithic Dome Institute (MDI) now has a fully functioning branch in China. It's headed by Gary Gaines, who has successfully operated an import/export business in China for many years. In January 2002, Rick Crandall, MDI's consulting architect, flew to Hong Kong and met with Gaines. Their meeting had a twofold purpose: to establish contacts with the Chinese Government, construction companies and other businesses interested in Chinese development; to determine China's most immediate and severe needs that the Monolithic Dome could alleviate or minimize. Crandall said that Gaines and others he talked with quickly identified three areas of need that Monolithic Domes could eliminate. "Over a half million people starve in China every year. The trucking industry and food storage are sadly lacking there, making Monolithic Domes for bulk storage a good plan. "Second would be housing," Crandall continued, "not single family housing, but large apartment complexes. And thirdly, the Chinese would do well to build a Monolithic Dome for just about any business or use." Currently, Gaines continues establishing contacts, studying the market, and overseeing the translation into Chinese of MDI's feasibility study form. Meanwhile, Crandall is completing drawings for several proposed projects.
