Dome
Technology of Idaho Falls reports they have recently completed the
largest flyash storage built in the world. The 220' x 20' Monolithic Dome,
built for Great River Energy of North Dakota, is capable of storing enough
flyash to fill a train twelve and a half miles long.
Also recently
completed is the world's largest petroleum coke storage building in St.
Croix, Virgin Islands for Hovensa Oil. Each dome is two-hundred-sixty feet
in diameter and one-hundred-sixteen feet high. The six-million dollar dome
project is a portion of the two-billion dollar "coker" expansion to the
Hovensa refinery.
Under construction
in Valparaiso, Indiana is a first of its kind Monolithic Dome commercial
bakery, Natural Ovens Bakery.
The entire second floor, which consists of an eight-inch concrete floor
slab which hangs off the dome shell above. The dead load of the floor
and live load of the oven and food processing equipment make this an astronomical
load. This allows the bottom floor of over 38,000 square feet, nearly
one acre, to be completely clear span without supports, posts, pillars,
and obstructions. Natural
Ovens can produce 50,000 loaves of bread, bagels, or other products
in a day. Construction completion is estimated for July 2002; therefore,
operations will begin in August.
